Odyssey, Fischerspooner’s sophomore platter, is, oddly enough, one of my top favorite albums of all time. Pulling a stratospheric single out of your @$$, as the act did with electroclash staple “Emerge” from their #1 debut, always inevitably puts pressure on said act to repeat the feat. Prove they’re not just a one track pony. Casey Spooner, front-man for the perpetually evolving performance art collective, was certainly a smidgen nervous about its follow-up when I interviewed him six years ago for E-Gen Magazine (precursor to 303). Odyssey far exceeded expectations, IMO. Although its slightly more accessible electro-pop direction probably had some crying “sellout”, the tunes delivered in a huge way. Turns out hired guns were behind a few of its meatiest hooks. David Byrne and Linda Perry were among them. Byrne was the brain behind Talking Heads and Perry was the primary force in 4 Non-Blondes, though she has gradually emerged as one of the most highly sought-after hit makers in the business (Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Pink, etc.). Not surprisingly, then label Capitol’s dime was behind financing such high profile collaborations. Spooner was apparently traumatized by the major label makeover, though, and Capitol capsized soon after anyways. Back to basics was their only viable option for third catalog entry Entertainment. Although sometimes it’s impossible to get proper perspective on a new release, Entertainment seems like a misnomer in the aural sense. The duo’s new stage show, drawing inspiration from Vaudeville, 60s-era space program and Kabuki theatre, sounds much more entertaining than the actual album. Custom costumes, makeup, choreography, lighting, video and props are all to be expected. Just don't have your heart set on live vocals, however, as they've been suspected of lip synching on more than one occasion.
