In late 2002, I was at a Heavyweight Dub Champion show at The Boulder Theater. On this particular occasion, they had gone the extra mile and elaborately decked out the venue with feathers, animal skulls and other tribal paraphernalia—all things that reminded me of the tribal couture spearheaded by San Franciscans at Burning Man (at least since my “de-virginization” in 2000, if not before). Something about the décor aligned the two events in my mind. I asked Josh Ivy if he had ever heard of Lorin Bassnectar, an SF-based DJ/producer who seemed to me the desert epicenter of the burgeoning subculture. Turns out Ivy had a Bassnectar track in his record bag (a re-rub of the Spearhead cut “Skin on the Drum”). In that moment, Ivy and I bonded over our mutual appreciation for the then obscure longhair and contemplated, for the very first time, bringing the ‘Nectar to our neck of the woods.

Fast forward to February 2009. Bassnectar is currently in the midst of his single biggest Colorado run yet, including dates in Durango, Aspen, Denver, Fort Collins and Vail. Last night’s set at The Ogden was one of the most epic sets I’ve heard from him in a minute, and witnessing Heavyweight Dub Champion warm up the sold out crowd was fulfilling, to say the least. Talk about coming full circle. After quelling fears of premature closing time (while a stagehand distributed ear plugs), Bassnectar kicked off his two hour escapade with a hip hop mix of Guns & Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle”. As usual, he ran the BPM gamut from down-tempo to jungle, and the genre eclecticism had to be heard to be believed. Musical shenanigans included Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker”, a Santogold masher, big top hip hop, a remix of Steve Miller’s “Fly Like an Eagle”, Diplo’s Clash-biting beat (made famous by M.I.A.), a collaboration with Boulder’s Jantsen and his spin on Imogen Heap’s Frou Frou-credited Garden State standout “Let Go”, which I first heard during one of his always epic Burning Man sunrise sets in 2006. Neglecting to mention Videolicious' stellar video mixing would be a crime. Boris has come a long way in his day. Even though Bassnectar was unable to play my Faint request “Fulcrum & Lever” due to laptop nonsense, I could not have been more aurally satisfied unless tiny fairies had massaged my eardrums…“happy ending” style.

The underground mastermind has done it again.
