Since when are rock stars expected to be grammatically correct? Last I checked, the profession in question was about healthy rebellion, about not conforming to society’s norms. Vegas-based band The Killers discovered otherwise recently, when they released their third disc’s first single “Human”. The Grammar Police had a hissy fit. Don’t get your panties in a bunch, kids. Lead man Brandon Flowers knew exactly what he was doing when he wrote, “Are we human, or are we dancer?” It’s not as if he had a ginormous brain fart. In fact, he claims to have agonized plenty over the exact lyrical structure of the line, citing renegade Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson as a primary influence. Besides, Flowers certainly isn’t the first lyricist in history to verbally moon his English teacher. Get over it, Grammar Nazis. If it really rubs you the wrong way, here’s a show-stopping solution for you: refrain from listening.
