Ok, I'll admit it.

I'm biased.

I've been a fan of Renaissance Recordings and The Masters Series for years. Their past releases have featured legends like Dave Seaman, Nick Warren, Danny Howells, and Hernan Cattaneo, and Renaissance's latest masterpiece is by returning jock Satoshi Tomiie.

This two-disc set is all about four-on-the-floor progressive house music, and the journey has enough twists and turns into the deep and tech-house realm to keep underground ears interested and listening. The mixing is unmistakably Satoshi -- smooth, flawless blends with creative effects and a unique set build. "My definition of house remains the same -- an open-minded, evolving form of dance music," Satoshi explains.

Disc 1 kicks off in a deep jazzy ambiance with offerings from house heroes such as Shuri-i-kan and Toby Tobias. The smoothness of the mix is tempered with a mild sassiness that creeps out on tracks like "Ice on the Sun" and "Dead Souls". Disc 2 opens with a subtle and sexy hook on "Madrugada" (one of Satoshi's own projects under the Mes moniker) and is a good contrast to the companion mix, bringing out a slightly darker and more energetic vibe. There aren't any big surprises here but the music is top quality and the mood is both intelligent and inspiring. Sexy vocals balance out epic instrumentals and the mix as a whole is as full-bodied as it is beautiful.

In a world of mediocre and stale DJ mix compilations, Satoshi Tomiie does indeed open one's mind to the renaissance, the revival of artistic and audio achievement and vigor.

This set was so much better than his 3D comp. Good job!
